The Baltic University was a unique institution: it was created in the midst of chaos and started under the most difficult conditions in DP camps of devastated Germany. At the beginning there was no scientific equipment and no means to acquire anything, no salariesfor teachers. Despite these facts academic people of the three Baltic states organized within a few months a university in Hamburg with eight facilities with 17 departments. The work a the university was an adventure and struggle at the same time, but nonetheless the university was able to exist three and a half years and gave many Baltic students the possiblity to start an academic career.
