Exhibition
Growing up in Canada. Childhood and Youth in the Memories of Estonian Canadians
June 3, 2026 - September 14, 2026
Tartu College, 3 Madison Ave.
The exhibition provides an overview of the activities of the Estonian community in Canada related to children and youth, from the beginning of exile to the present day, looking at which strategies have ensured the survival of Estonianness in Canada more than 80 years after the great flight of 1944. VEMU Estonian Museum Canada in Toronto and the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu organized a school tradition collection competition for Estonians in Canada in 2021. The exhibition is mainly based on contributions received from current students as well as people who previously studied and/or worked in Estonian schools. The stories recorded during the collection campaign add a human dimension to the exhibition. The collection campaign and exhibition are dedicated to the memory of Edgar Marten (1920—2020), the long-time director of the Toronto Estonian School.
